Book Review: Awake At Dawn by C.C. Hunter

Book Stats:
Awake At Dawn by C.C. Hunter
(Book #2 of Shadow Falls)
Source: Purchased
Format: Kindle, 383 pages
Publisher: St. Martin's Griffin
Publication Date: 10/11/2011
Reading Level: Young Adult
Genre: Paranormal, Romance
Goodreads Summary: Step into the world of Shadow Falls, a camp that helps teens tap into their special…talents. Once you visit, you’ll never forget it—and you’ll never, ever be the same. From the moment Kylie Galen arrived at Shadow Falls Camp, she’s had one burning question: What am I? Surrounded by vampires, werewolves, shape-shifters, fairies and witches, Kylie longs to figure out her own supernatural identity…and what her burgeoning powers mean. And now she’ll need them more than ever, because she’s being haunted by a new spirit who insists that someone Kylie knows—and loves—will die before the end of the summer. If only she only knew who she was supposed to save. And how… But giving Kylie the most trouble is her aching heart. Gorgeous werewolf Lucas left camp with another girl, but he’s still visiting Kylie in her dreams. And Derek, a sexy half Fae who’s always been there for her when she needed him, is pushing to get more serious—and growing impatient, especially when Lucas returns. Kylie knows she needs to decide between the boys, and it’s tearing her up inside. Yet romance will have to wait, because something from the dark side of the supernatural world is hiding in Shadow Falls. It’s about to threaten everything she holds dear…and bring her closer to her destiny.
Well, the book is pretty much nearly the same as how it was fashioned in its debut, Born At Midnight but I did enjoy it anyway. In true C.C. Hunter fashion, she amazingly mixes teenage drama with the supernaturals and she continues to do so in Awake At Dawn. Seriously, it felt like I was watching my favorite reality TV show! So yes, drama is everywhere in this book.

Things we're pretty usual in Shadow Falls Camp except for the fact that Lucas left with Federicka tagging along and Derek is growing closer to Kylie. She is still figuring out what she really is, although, we do get a few hints here and there. She drank blood and liked it, so it grew suspicions that she might be a vampire. She had a growth spurt and had immense strength, which also raised suspicions that she might be a werewolf instead. So the confusion of who she is confusing and intriguing as ever! There is also another deal with a supernatural ghost that turns out to be the stem of a sweet little twist in this story. Also, I believe I have been introduced to the so-called "villains" in this series.

Now I'm gonna address the reason why I gave this 4 stars instead of the 5 that I gave it predecessor. This series is very character/romance based and if you've read my previous reviews before, you will know I'm not such a fan of love triangles.. or more like when the girl in the love triangle can't seem to get her head and heart straight on ONE guy. It frustrates the heck out of me! I really like Kylie, she's someone I can really imagine easy to befriend but with her boy drama-rama? She just became stupid. Also, I didn't like how she feigned innocence when it came to Derek, when she was as guilty as she accused her to be.

I was mad that Lucas wasn't a part of the book until like the second half (You do get little glimpses of him though) but when he came back, it was worth missing him. I just melted into a puddle of hormones because he's sweeter than ever! You will find out the reason of his absence but I felt that C.C. Hunter should have elaborated on that more thoroughly because I wanted to get to know Lucas more instead on focusing SO much on his relationship problems with Kylie.

I've grown to like Derek too because for the first half of the book, he was Kylie's knight and shining armor. So my heart broke for him. Derek, just pick me, okay? I could always use a green eyed fairy who can shoot up euphoria or talk to animals. Seriously, call me. Part of me was a little sad but I can't help the fangirl in me from saying,"YAY FOR LUCAS!".

As I said, it's very similar to how Born At Midnight was structured so it's predictable. There is also some action along with the mystery and romance. The sub-characters are as lovable and frustrating as ever! I think I loved Della and Miranda even more in this book, and that's from PRAISING them before. There's also Holiday, Burnett, Perry, etc.

This book really brings out the teenager in me... I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing! and I can't wait to see how Kylie's story unfolds in the next book, Taken At Dusk. Title sounds pretty ominous, don't you think?
