Book Review: The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

Book Stats:
The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
(Book #1 of The Hunger Games)
Source: Purchased
Format: Paperback, 374 pages
Publisher: Scholastic
Publication Date: 6/1/2010
Reading Level: Young Adult
Genre: Sci-fi, Romance
Goodreads Summary: Winning means fame and fortune. Losing means certain death. The Hunger Games have begun... In the ruins of a place once known as North America lies the nation of Panem, the shining Capitol surrounded by twelve outlying districts. The Capitol is harsh and keeps the districts in line by forcing them all to send one boy and one girl between the ages of twelve and eighteen to participate in the annual Hunger Games, a fight to the death on live TV. Sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen regards it as a death sentence when she steps forward to take her sister's place in the Games. But Katniss has been close to dead before--and survival, for her, is second nature. Without really meaning to, she becomes a contender. But if she is to win, she will have to start making choices that weigh survival against humanity and life against love.
I honestly haven't heard of the series and the author ever before. As the movie was coming out, I didn't even knew it was from a book but when I saw the trailer which amazed and intrigued me. Teens set out to kill each other for fame, fortune and of course, life? Count me in. I have always doubted movies will ever be better than the books itself so I went to the bookstore and checked this bad boy out.

Right from the get-go, Suzanne Collins gives you details of the eerie, dystopian world of Panem. My gut really clenched at the imagery of hunger as it was very realistic. No matter how laughably impossible the premise should have appeared to me, I can't help but think, 100 years from now, could it be possible? That 's how haunting this book this was. Although, I did laugh at the minor reason why they conduct The Hunger Games in the first place, it didn't seem all too terrifying to me but I went along for the ride.

Which is where we met Katniss, the fearless hunter from the District 12, I never expected to love a stubborn heroine so much but I just loved her! She exudes confidence and strength. She is wise, witty and overall, noble when it comes down to it. Her story and the journey she goes through, physically and emotionally, was very uplifting. No wonder little girl all around the world want to be Katniss because I, myself, really want to as well!

I was introduced to infamous bread boy, Peeta. Katniss' hunter partner, Gale. Her sister, Prim and all the other complex bunch of characters that we're correlated to the games. I loved every bit of these characters, that has nothing to do with the fact that I've finished reading the series as I'm writing this review. I really loved them from the start. Suzanne Collins just knows how to make you care for them and feel with them. I actually cried!

This was a book full of death, sorrow, sacrifice, heartbreak and was executed breathtakingly beautiful. I wouldn't have wanted it any other way.
